Shell Steps In: The New Anchor of India’s Energy Security

Global energy major Shell plc has significantly increased its natural gas supplies to India in response to disruptions triggered by the West Asia conflict, leveraging its extensive liquefied natural gas (LNG) portfolio to capture a larger share of both spot and long-term demand, including key fertiliser sector tenders.

According to industry sources, the company emerged as a leading supplier in a recent bulk LNG procurement by Indian fertiliser firms, securing nearly 4 trillion British thermal units (TBtus) out of the 6 TBtus tendered. The procurement was aimed at ensuring adequate gas availability for urea production amid supply constraints from the Gulf region.

With shipments from QatarEnergy—India’s largest LNG supplier—impacted by the ongoing geopolitical situation, Shell’s India operations stepped in to bridge the supply gap. The company recorded its highest-ever monthly LNG imports into India in March, reflecting its ability to quickly mobilise global supply chains to meet rising demand.
